Sep 13, 2009Sun1:00 PM Live Band: Charlie & The Girls (State Street Entertainment)  "Charlie and The Girl's" are a family bluegrass band from Ellis Grove, Il . They play traditional bluegrass and gospel music.
The band consists of Charlie , 17yrs.old who plays fiddle, lead guitar and mandolin; Emily 14 yrs. old who plays mandlin, guitar and banjo;
Rosemary 11 yrs. old who plays fiddle, mandolin,and guitar; Natalie 8 yrs. old also sings. Kabbie their mother accompanies them on the upright bass.
Charlie and Emily take turns singing the lead while the rest of the family harmonize to good old fashioned bluegrass tunes. You'll have a
foot tappin' good time listening to this energetic young family band.
They first became interested in bluegrass when they visited the Silver Dollar City "Blue Grass & Bar-B-Q Festival" in 2006. They were selected to perform in the 4-H Showcase Performance Show at the Illinois State Fair in August 2008.

We have signed on with JCJ Amusements to provide clean, exciting rides to satisfy everyone's expectations and budget. The all-mechanical carnival will offer rides for $1, $2, and $3 each. Don Welge of the Gilster Mary-Lee Corp. has again offered us this prime, safe location, the parking lots behind Chester National Bank. The members of Peace Lutheran Church have also offered their parking lot for the carnival's use. This will provide easy, level access to more rides so that all family members may join in the fun. The massive 5 and a half ton grey granite likenesses will eternally pay tribute to the duo that caused Popeye to be introduced in the Thimble Theatre comic strip! Don't wimp out!!!! Sep 12, 2009Sat9:00 AM Volleyball Tournament (Eagles) Registration is underway for the annual Popeye Picnic Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament.

Coordinator Stacey Search says the sand, co-ed volleyball tournament will be held on Saturday, September 12th, beginning at 9am at the Chester Eagles on Hacker Street.

Entry fee is $60 per team.

A food stand will be available to players and spectators at the tournament.

For more information about the rules of the tournament or to register your team, you can contact Stacey Search at 618-826-3660 or 618-615-6224.

Join in the fun as regional teams compete all day long. A break will be scheduled at about 11:00 so participants can enjoy today's parade.

Sep 11, 2009Fri8:00 PM Olive Oyl's Prize Paradise Prize Pickup deadline (Central Stand) Our extremely popular raffle guarantees over 100 quality prizes will be awarded throughout the weekend. 8pm tonight is the deadline for all names drawn for Friday, Sept. 11th. Participants need not be present to win, but their prize must be claimed by 8pm on the day that their name was drawn. Tickets are available at the Central Stand in Sweet Haven Harbor next to RoughHouse's Food Court. Over a thousand dollars in prizes were awarded last year, and we expect an even greater response from our generous donors this year!!!

Popeye will be on hand to award the coveted Spinach Bowl Trophy to the winner of tonight's game.

Sep 11, 2009Fri4:30 PM Live Band: Charlie and the Girls (State Street Entertainment)  "Charlie and The Girl's" are a family bluegrass band from Ellis Grove, Il . They play traditional bluegrass and gospel music.
The band consists of Charlie , 17yrs.old who plays fiddle, lead guitar and mandolin; Emily 14 yrs. old who plays mandlin, guitar and banjo;
Rosemary 11 yrs. old who plays fiddle, mandolin,and guitar; Natalie 8 yrs. old also sings. Kabbie their mother accompanies them on the upright bass.
Charlie and Emily take turns singing the lead while the rest of the family harmonize to good old fashioned bluegrass tunes. You'll have a
foot tappin' good time listening to this energetic young family band.
They first became interested in bluegrass when they visited the Silver Dollar City "Blue Grass & Bar-B-Q Festival" in 2006. They were selected to perform in the 4-H Showcase Performance Show at the Illinois State Fair in August 2008.

Sep 11, 2009Fri4:00 PM Castor Oyl's Carnival Rides (behind Chester National Bank) The 30th annual Popeye Picnic officially begins as the Carnival rides open today at 4pm (at last year's favorite location on the fairgrounds) and remain open until 10pm. We have signed on with JCJ Amusements to provide clean, exciting rides to satisfy everyone's expectations and budget. The all-mechanical carnival will offer rides for $1, $2, and $3 each. Don Welge of the Gilster Mary-Lee Corp. has again offered us this prime, safe location, the parking lots behind Chester National Bank. The members of Peace Lutheran Church have also offered their parking lot for the carnival's use. This will provide easy, level access to more rides so that all family members may join in the fun. This year's festival boasts more bands and performances than ever before. "Steve Kirn's One Man Band" opens on stage at 4pm, followed by "AOTA" at 6:30pm. To close out the evening "Tempting Eve" will entertain our guests from 8 until midnight.
